Modeling prevalence means combining how many new injuries occur each year with how long people survive afterward. The approach dates back decades. In 1975, epidemiologist John Kurtzke produced an early US prevalence estimate of 525 per million by multiplying incidence by an assumed average survival duration, a method later refined as survival data improved.
