Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

Harnessing the Body’s Natural Healing Power

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy is a biologic treatment that uses components of your own blood to support healing in tissues such as tendons, ligaments, and joints. While PRP is not a cure-all, research shows it can improve recovery and reduce pain in certain spine-related conditions when carefully selected. At Desert Spine and Pain, led by Dr. David L. Greenwald, M.D., FAANS, FACS, we approach PRP conservatively and evidence-based. We offer it only when it’s appropriate, safe, and likely to help — always integrated into a broader treatment plan.

What Is PRP Therapy?

  • In simple terms: PRP takes your own blood, spins it in a centrifuge, and concentrates the healing platelets. The resulting solution is injected into the injured area to promote recovery.

  • Scientifically: Platelets contain growth factors such as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β). These molecules promote cell repair, tissue regeneration, and modulation of inflammation.

When We Use PRP in Spine Care

PRP may be considered in patients who:

  • Have not responded to traditional conservative treatments (PT, medications, injections)

  • Want to explore biologic options before surgery

  • Need help with soft tissue healing after sports-related injuries

Potential uses in spine-related care include:

  • Degenerative disc disease (select cases)

  • Facet joint arthritis (to reduce inflammation and pain)

  • Sacroiliac joint pain

  • Ligament/tendon injuries such as lumbar sprain/strain or whiplash

Note: PRP is not a replacement for surgery in cases of severe nerve compression or spinal instability.

The PRP Procedure

  1. Blood draw – A small sample of your blood is collected.

  2. Centrifugation – The blood is spun in a centrifuge to concentrate platelets.

  3. Preparation – Platelet-rich plasma is separated and drawn into a syringe.

  4. Injection – PRP is injected under sterile conditions, often with fluoroscopy (X-ray) or ultrasound guidance for accuracy.

The procedure typically takes 30–60 minutes and is done in an outpatient setting.

Benefits of PRP Therapy

  • Uses your own blood — no foreign substances

  • Promotes natural healing rather than masking symptoms

  • May reduce pain and inflammation

  • May speed recovery from injuries

  • Minimally invasive with little downtime

Risks and Limitations

  • Mild soreness or swelling at the injection site

  • Infection risk (rare, minimized with sterile technique)

  • Effectiveness varies — not all patients respond

  • Not covered by all insurance plans (often an out-of-pocket treatment)

  • Still being studied for long-term outcomes in spine care

Recovery Timeline

  • First 1–2 days: Soreness at injection site

  • Week 1–2: Gradual reduction in pain and improved function

  • Weeks 4–6: Noticeable benefits for many patients

  • Months 3–6: Continued tissue remodeling and healing

Patients usually resume normal activity quickly, though high-intensity sports or lifting may be restricted briefly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is PRP the same as stem cell therapy?

No. PRP uses platelets from your blood. Stem cell therapy uses regenerative cells from bone marrow or fat.

Is PRP safe?

Yes. Since it comes from your own blood, risks are low. The main risks are minor soreness or rare infection.

How many PRP treatments will I need?

Often 1–3 treatments spaced weeks apart, depending on your condition and response.

Is PRP covered by insurance?

Often not. We’ll discuss costs upfront before scheduling.

How does Desert Spine and Pain use PRP differently?

We apply it only when clinically appropriate, as part of a bigger recovery plan — not as a stand-alone “miracle cure.”
