Stem Cell Treatments

Exploring Regenerative Medicine for Spine Care

Stem cell treatments are a type of regenerative medicine designed to use your body’s own cells to repair and heal damaged tissues. While still considered emerging therapy, stem cell injections are being studied for spine-related pain and degeneration. At Desert Spine and Pain, led by Dr. David L. Greenwald, M.D., FAANS, FACS, we take an evidence-based approach. Stem cell therapy is not a cure-all, and it’s not right for everyone. But in select cases, it may provide relief when traditional treatments haven’t worked.

What Are Stem Cell Treatments?

  • In simple terms: Stem cells are “building block” cells that can develop into many different tissue types. When injected into injured areas, they may promote healing and reduce inflammation.

  • Scientifically: Stem cells have the potential to differentiate into cartilage, bone, or other connective tissues. They release bioactive molecules (cytokines, growth factors) that reduce inflammation, encourage tissue repair, and may slow degenerative changes.

Types of Stem Cell Therapies

  • Autologous stem cells (from your body):

    • Typically harvested from bone marrow aspirate or adipose (fat) tissue

    • Processed and reinjected into the injured area

  • Allogeneic stem cells (from donors):

    • Derived from umbilical cord tissue or other sources

    • Used less commonly; regulatory status varies

At Desert Spine and Pain, we only consider safe, FDA-compliant approaches and explain the evidence clearly before recommending treatment.

When Stem Cell Therapy May Be Considered

  • Degenerative disc disease – To support disc health and reduce inflammation

  • Facet joint arthritis – To help regenerate joint tissue

  • Sacroiliac joint pain – For chronic degeneration not improved with injections

  • Sports injuries – For ligament or tendon damage resistant to PT or medications

Stem cells are not appropriate for patients with severe spinal stenosis, instability, fractures, or nerve compression requiring surgery.

The Stem Cell Procedure

  1. Harvesting – Stem cells are collected, usually from your pelvis (bone marrow aspirate) or fat tissue.

  2. Processing – Cells are concentrated and prepared in a sterile lab or clinical setting.

  3. Injection – Stem cells are injected into the damaged disc, joint, or tissue under X-ray or ultrasound guidance.

  4. Recovery – Patients typically go home the same day and resume normal activities within days.

The entire process usually takes a few hours.

Benefits of Stem Cell Therapy

  • Minimally invasive and outpatient-based

  • Uses your body’s own cells (autologous)

  • May reduce inflammation and pain

  • May improve tissue healing and slow degeneration

  • Can delay or reduce the need for surgery in some cases

Risks and Limitations

  • Pain, bleeding, or infection at harvest or injection sites

  • Effectiveness varies; not all patients respond

  • Regulatory status in the U.S. limits certain types of stem cell use

  • Often not covered by insurance (out-of-pocket expense)

  • Still under study — long-term outcomes are not fully established

Recovery Timeline

  • Days 1–7: Mild soreness at harvest and injection sites

  • Weeks 2–6: Gradual improvement in pain and function

  • Months 3–6: Maximum benefit often seen as tissue healing continues

  • Long-term: Some patients experience lasting relief, but booster treatments may be needed

Frequently Asked Questions

Are stem cells FDA-approved for spine treatment?

Currently, most spine-related uses are considered investigational. We provide only FDA-compliant options and review all regulatory considerations with you.

Is stem cell therapy safe?

Yes, when done with autologous cells in a sterile environment. Risks include soreness, infection, or lack of improvement.

How is stem cell therapy different from PRP?

PRP uses concentrated platelets, while stem cell therapy uses regenerative cells capable of differentiating into various tissues.

How long does relief last?

Results vary. Some patients report benefits for months to years, while others see minimal improvement.

How does Desert Spine and Pain approach stem cell therapy differently?

We are cautious, science-driven, and always transparent. Stem cells are just one option — never presented as a “miracle cure.”
